It occurred to me last night while I was listening to Spurgeon’s ” All of Grace” that the doctrine of predestination is an explanation not of the saved, but of the damned. Its an explanation of judgement. If God’s Grace is completely free and faith is a gift from God, then how we “get” salvation is rather straight forward , we are given it. Now if Grace is irresistible ( as a gift from a sovereign God might be expected to be), then those who don’t have it, didn’t get it (it here being salvation). There you have the bit about explaining the damned rather then the saved.
